Charles Lawrence Bolté (1895-1989) was born in Chicago, Illinois. A 1917 graduate of the Armour Institute of Technology, he was commissioned in the Officers Reserve Corps and began active duty. In 1932, he finished the Command and General Staff School and graduated from the Army War College in 1937. He rose to brigadier general in 1942 and served as chief of staff of U.S. forces in the British Isles until 1943.
